Stop the buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz.
Stop the buzz buzz buzz buzz buzz.
Parts you will need to complete the project.
•iPhone (of course)
•iPhone Dock
•Red Bull. Drink it first. Sugar-free is better in taste and less sticky for the remainder of the project. But if you like regular better that’s fine in either case just rinse the can out well before starting.
•Double stick tape. I used carpet tape for superior thickness to strength ratio. UPDATE: I moved to white double sided foam mounting tape. The carpet tape didn’t hold up overnight.
Tools you will find helpful.
•VERY sharp scissors. Don’t use scissors that you care too much about as you’ll be using them to cut the Red Bull can.
•A carpenter knife. (Optional. I find better control. If your not a pro knife user don’t use this method. i am not responsible for injury or death as of this disclaimer).
•A metal straight edge of some kind. (optional)
•Patience.
Quick Directions.
I may or may not post images if build another one.
•Cut top and bottom off the Red Bull can. This can be rough. You can clean it up later with a scissors or straight edge and knife.
•Un-curl the can by gently forming it in the opposite direction. I did this by placing rolling it the opposite way on the edge of the desk in half-inch sections. Be patient and gentle.
•Lay the can across the the back of the dock and mark the cuts for trimming then cut down the can and notch spot for the dock connector and AV Output.
•Using a scissors (or optional knife) cut out your can as you marked it. I found using a knife caused the edges to roll back and not be razor sharp.
•Gently bend and shape your final shield to hold the radius of the back of the dock.
•Place the double stick tape across the bottom and adhere it to your dock.
That’s it. Done. Congratulations of your new iPhone Red Bull anti-interference shield.
UPDATE:
It should be noted that until I adhered the can to the dock I still got some noise. Also, This only shields the sides and the back, so speakers and items in the front 180° of the dock may still get interference, but if you surround the whole thing you can’t see the screen and your reception really drops off.
There is also a little interference and buzzing when you dock it and the sync starts but emails, SMS, and Calls no longer produce the buzz. Your results may vary.
Description:
The iPhone anti-interference shield effectively reduces or eliminates all the buzzing sounds the iPhone inflicts on surrounding unshielded speakers.
Might hinder your reception a little though I can’t see a difference.
Build time:
15-30 minutes.
Tested with:
1st Generation iPhone
Surrounding Speakers:
Old school Apple branded Bose 501 Self-amplified speakers from the Mac Classic days.
Phone with speaker.
Cisco 7960 VoIP phone
Your results may vary.
I still get a little noise if the iPhone is really close to speakers but it is roughly 95% better.
